Game Of Thrones season 8: everything we know so far
The eighth and final season of Game Of Thrones is sooooooo nearly upon us. So here's everything we know so far...

Firstly, check out the new trailer above. HBO just dropped another teaser for season 8 of Game Of Thrones, and it featured the release date. Hooray!
Game Of Thrones season 8 release date
Game Of Thrones season 8 release date is... drum roll please... 14th April 2019!
Ages and ages ago HBO confirmed in an official statement that Game Of Thrones season 8 wouldn't be with us until 2019.
The statement read: "The epic fantasy series Game of Thrones will return for its six-episode, eighth and final season in 2019.
"David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnik will be the directors for the new season. Writers for the new season are David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill.
"The executive producers of the series are David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger and Bernadette Caulfield. Co-executive producers are Bryan Cogman, Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis and George R.R. Martin."
We kinda already knew this because Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark confirmed to Variety that the eighth and final season of GOT won't air until 2019 but we were hoping she might have got her wires crossed or summat. She said: "I'm really excited. Game Of Thrones comes out in 2019." She added that HBO's hit series still has "six or seven months left" of production, before joking, "we started in October, so we’re maybe like a tenth of the way through."
Game Of Thrones season 8 first look
Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) were looking rather regal in a glimpse from season 8 on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. And, er, they don't *really* look any different. BUT, in the interview to accompany the first look, executive producer Bryan Cogman teased:
"It's about all of these disparate characters coming together to face a common enemy, dealing with their own past, and defining the person they want to be in the face of certain death.
"It's an incredibly emotional, haunting, bittersweet final season and I think it honours very much what [author George RR Martin] set out to do – which is flipping this kind of story on its head."
How many episodes will there be in Game Of Thrones season 8?
We’ve been told by the showrunners that Game Of Thrones season 8 will be another short one. We’re looking at six episodes.
How long will the episodes be in Game Of Thrones season 8?
Okay, so we’re getting fewer episodes, but we were told a while ago that they will be longer. It’s looking like instead of an hour for each episode, season 8 could boast 80-minute episodes. And there may even be feature-length episodes.
"Two hours per episode seems like it would be excessive, but it's a great show, so who knows?" HBO's Casey Bloys said.
And Liam Cunninghma, who play Ser Davos, revealed in October to TV Guide: "[The episodes are] definitely going to be bigger and what I hear is longer.
"We're filming right up until the summer.
"When you think about it, up until last season we'd have six months to do ten episodes, so we're [doing] way more than that for six episodes. So that obviously will translate into longer episodes."
Then in November the show's director, David Nutter, revealed that every single episode will be longer than an hour. During a Reddit AMA, when he was asked about the length of the upcoming final season episodes, David replied: "Season eight episodes will all I think be longer than 60 minutes. They'll be dancing around the bigger numbers, I know that for sure."
Has the script for Game Of Thrones season 8 been written?
Yes. Yes it has. HBO’s Casey confirmed this in 2017, but, of course, everyone’s keeping tight-lipped about what will actually happen in the final season.
Will Games of Thrones season 8 be the final season?
Sadly yes. The president of programming at HBO Michael Lombardo has previously said Game Of Thrones would end after eight seasons.
"David and Dan are feeling there's probably two more years after season six, that's what we're looking at right now," he said in January before season 7 aired.
And in June last year, HBO’s Casey said: The showrunners have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do. If I could get them to do more I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they [need] to make the best version of their show."
